Meet StockStories: The Company Leading The Surplus Revolution In The Fashion Industry

The fashion industry ranks among the world’s most wasteful and polluting industries, with a vast majority of excess products ultimately ending up in landfills. Founded in 2020, StockStories is a rapidly growing company that aims to tackle this problem head-on by revolutionizing how surplus inventory is handled and distributed. Its vision is to create a more sustainable and resourceful industry.
“Our primary objective was to create a platform that would encourage and facilitate a more sustainable fashion industry by helping reduce waste and the overall environmental impact of the fashion industry,” explains Shay Inbar, one of the company’s co-founders.
“As experienced entrepreneurs who are also familiar with the fashion world, we realized that one of the most pressing challenges of this industry also contains a part of the potential solution. All you need to do is break the vicious cycle of excess-waste production. The resources are basically there; you only have to find and match them in real-time with potential B2B buyers. It’s like a dating platform but for matching retailers and wholesalers with the merchandise they are looking for precisely, with the ultimate goal of making the world a better place,” adds Shay.
It’s difficult to pigeonhole StockStories into any familiar categories. The massive selection it boasts on the platform is on par with that of marketplace enterprises but in wholesale quantities. StockStories prefer to think of themselves as global wholesalers in terms of customer relations and emphasis on trust, transparency, and reliability. Its model is conceptually simple yet innovative and unique.
The StockStories platform offers retailers and other businesses unsold and overstock inventory from fashion brands and manufacturers at a discounted price. They have established a massive network of suppliers from all over the globe, including renowned fashion brands and textile factories. Once a certain factory overstock comes in, hundreds of customers get notified. The platform uses a smart system that ensures the compatibility of the merchandise with the customer’s specific trade profile. If a customer wants to purchase an overstock item, an onsite team inspects the product for quality and accuracy and handles the shipping and relabeling per the customer’s needs. Most importantly, the transaction is carried out directly and exclusively with StockStories, which means it assumes full responsibility throughout the process.
Co-founder Yuval Navon explains the fundamental motivation behind StockStories: “We are basically replacing the linear concept of surplus production leading to large quantities of waste with a circular economy concept. Every week we salvage tons and tons of high-quality merchandise which we offer to our retail customers at a fraction of the price they would otherwise pay for a similar line of products, which would have been manufactured in excess, ended up in a landfill, and so on. It’s a win-win for everyone, and especially for the environment.”
Since its inception, the company has gained hundreds of customers. Yuval offers a profile of the main beneficiaries of their unique activity model: “Our goods come from two main sources – textile factories and fashion brands. Goods delivered directly from factories are relabeled, whether utilizing our own labels or the customers’ private label brand. Our ‘Outlet’ store consists of brand-new overstock items (some exclusive to us, I should add) that are currently stored at a specific retailer or brand storage facility. As branded merchandise, it cannot be relabeled and sold under another brand name; the advantage is that the merchandise reliably reflects the brand’s DNA in terms of sizing, quality, style, etc. In both cases, our customers are guaranteed high-quality goods for as much as 70 percent below market price, which means significantly higher profit margin.”
The two are now developing a new smart search feature on the StockStories platform that enables customers to upload a picture of a specific in-demand product. StockStories utilizes a wide range of sources for similar or identical items.
“The name of the game is optimization. We believe that in the fashion industry, like in the real world, just as there is a special someone out there for anyone, there is also a readymade item for every customer. Our mission is to make it possible for the two to meet; the more “matches” we facilitate, the more sustainable the industry becomes and the happier the environment. It’s as simple as that,” says Shay.
As for the future, Yuval and Shay think that the model they are proposing can truly revolutionize the fashion industry. “Once more chains and stores realize there is no point in producing new goods while the exact commodity they are after exists in abundance just a few clicks away, the positive impact on the industry and the environment will be inevitable. It’s time to wake up. We hope our story will also turn the tide among other players in the market – manufacturers and retailers alike.”
